Originally intended as a temporary home for animals, Akcent ZOO has instead become a lasting and freely accessible part of Białystok's green landscape.
When Akcent ZOO opened in Białystok in the 1960s, it was never intended to become a permanent institution. The three-hectare facility in 3 May Constitution Park was designed as a temporary place for animals while the city waited for a larger, permanent zoo to be built.
That larger zoo was never built. Akcent ZOO remained, gradually becoming part of the city's park landscape and developing a different role from the one originally envisaged.
For many years, the facility was managed by the Zieleń Miejska company. Today, its administrator is the Białystok Animal Shelter, while the zoo's main objective is to showcase native fauna. As part of this change in direction, some animals were transferred to other zoos between 2010 and 2012.
A zoo within the park
Akcent ZOO's location gives it an unusual relationship with the surrounding city. Situated within 3 May Constitution Park, the zoo is integrated into a public green space rather than standing apart from it.
Visitors can view the animals free of charge, with the main visitor path running around the zoo. The site can therefore be encountered as part of a walk through the park rather than requiring a separate paid visit.
A substantial modernisation was completed in December 2012. The work included new enclosures and a mini zoo, while the existing internal walkway was extended. This also opened up the area around the pond in the centre of the zoo to visitors. The total cost of the modernisation was approximately PLN 9 million.
Today, the zoo houses 13 species of mammals and nine species of birds.
Wildlife beyond the enclosures
The zoo's emphasis on native fauna is reflected not only in its managed collection but also in the wildlife found around it.
Common squirrels inhabit the grounds, while wild birds including rooks, jackdaws, magpies, rock pigeons, sparrows and starlings are also present. The central pond attracts migratory birds, including mallards and grey herons.
This makes Akcent ZOO a small but distinctive part of Białystok's urban environment. Its animal collection exists alongside the wildlife that naturally uses the surrounding park, creating a setting where the boundary between zoo and city green space is particularly close.
The history of Akcent ZOO is ultimately one of an institution that outlasted its original purpose. What was planned as a temporary facility became permanent, adapted to a new emphasis on native fauna and remained freely accessible within one of Białystok's parks.
